Annual retraining

HIPAA training is generally treated as an annual exercise, so your Certificate of Completion carries a validity date one year after it was issued. You can see it on the certificate itself, next to the issue date and certificate number.

Thirty days before that date, a banner appears on your dashboard inviting you to start your retraining, and the same reminder goes out as a notification. There is nothing to decide at that point beyond when to begin — starting before the expiry date means your records carry straight through with no gap. If the date passes first, the banner and reminders get firmer, and if you belong to an organization, your admins can see who has fallen overdue.

Starting retraining opens a fresh run through the same course: the eight chapters unlock in sequence again, each quiz needs its 80% again, and the final exam works exactly as before. When you pass it, a new certificate is issued with its own number and its own year of validity.

Retraining rides on your subscription: the yearly renewal — yours if you subscribe individually, or your organization's seat plan — is what pays for the retraining year. If access has lapsed when your training comes due, renew first and the retraining button does the rest.

Nothing from previous years is deleted. Every certificate you have ever earned stays on your certificate page with its dates and number, and your organization's audit exports keep reflecting your history. Retraining adds a new record on top of the old ones, which is exactly what a reviewer looking at your training file expects to find.

If your organization uses progress tracking and audit exports, the export includes each member's certificate expiry date and whether they are overdue, so the annual cycle is visible in the same file you would hand to a reviewer.
